Most nations around the world have some level of airlift capability which allows them to deploy into a variety of situations. Whether bringing relief, delivering outsize loads into a conflict zone or just routine movement of equipment or personnel, the military is often pressed into service, particularly in times of need. 

We have recently completed two military aircraft turnaround-and-dispatch projects at a significant European airbase. It was part of a more extensive programme of work which generated recommendations to optimise processes, alignments to respective regulations, improvements to equipment and infrastructure, and also identified some significant cost savings.  

Periodically, the costs of operating these missions come directly under the spotlight. Although the imperatives differ, importing knowledge, practices and skills from the civil sector can often bring about many benefits, not just in terms of cost but also efficiency and learning. 

Effective delivery is based around a safe, efficient and well-designed process. Although similar in some respects to civil aviation, this sector has many unique aspects that require careful and focussed management.
